Although it was first identified with Californian artists, today the phrase is used to describe one of the most distinctive tendencies in abstract painting throughout the United States in the 1960s. There is, however, a deep distinction between abstracting from appearances, even if to the point of unrecognizability, and making works of art out of forms not drawn from the visible world. During World War I the emergence of the de Stijl group in the Netherlands and of the Dada group in Zürich further widened the spectrum of abstract art. Inspired by abstract paintings, gallerist and photographer Alfred Stieglitz began to experiment with creating abstract photography.
Inspired by Cézanne's interest in geometric forms and multiple perspectives, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque pioneered the Cubism movement, which aimed to present a scene rendered from multiple perspectives. This manifested itself through the conversion of objects to flattened, often geometric, shapes. The glass of wine and bottle are formed from cut out bits of paper and pieces of newsprint are also included. While Picasso never became a fully abstract artist, Cubism represented a significant move towards complete abstraction.
In the late 1950s, the Californian art critic, poet and psychiatrist Jules Langsner began to observe an emerging trend in abstract art that stemmed from Color Field Painting, yet tended to employ clean lines and contrasting hues. During the 1960s and 1970s these artists often strove to make their artworks look like newspaper billboard ads. Art reached new levels of abstraction through the work of American painter Mark Rothko, who was renowned for his large-scale “Color Field” paintings. She also experimented with the use of negative space, sometimes leaving large areas of the canvas blank to create a sense of depth and balance. As a result of this experience, shortly thereafter O'Keeffe turned from abstraction in favor of more realistic depictions.
